As I said before. In the late 90's early 2000's, it wasn't about what the protagonists looked like. It wasn't about their skin tone. It was about the characteristics they embodied, or the adventure, or the story, or in this case, the friends one makes while playing the game. The most ironic part about about this entire situation is he's using a game, where the protagonist is covered in armor and you don't even see his face, to escape IRL bullying and racism.
He didn't care master chief wasn't black or white. It didn't matter. What mattered was the friends he made, not the skin color of the characters in the game.
