ON ESCAPISM

Image
The definition of escapism: the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, especially by seeking entertainment or engaging in fantasy. There's nothing wrong with escapism. Like anything, there's a time and place for it, and like anything, it gets abused. These days, the abuse of escapism is everywhere, where people are using it to run FROM their problems, when it should be used AFTER you've already dealt with your problems. Example: John plays video games for eleven hours because he doesn't want to submit his short story to an online magazine, but John should play video games AFTER he submitted his short story to an online magazine in order to not worry about it anymore. Proper escapism is the difference between avoiding the problem and not worrying about the problem because you've already taken care of it.
