Hip Tok, Tik Hop, Social Media Rap
Drake is catching a lot of criticism for his new album, which currently, at the time of this writing, sits at 52 on Metacritic. For the record, I’m in agreement with the current consensus, in that the Toronto emcee’s new album is what all the cool kids refer to as Mid. However, there’s an important factor everyone seems to be missing. This isn’t a Hip Hop record. This is a record for a new genre I have dubbed: Hip Tok! Hip Tok! As a Hip Hop album this album is mediocre, but as a Hip Tok album this album is phenomenal! I can easily hear IDGAF playing in the background during a tiktok video of a bunch of people "turning up," or Bahamas Promises playing in the background of a tiktok of some guy "getting over his girl" or "on his come back." Listening to Tried Our Best and I can already tell its going to be playing in the background of while teens film themselves crying over a breakup.
