Canibus & Ludacris, A Small Piece of Hip Hop History

In the early 2000's, Ludacris skills on the mic were solidified. There was no award, no plaque, no huge party. No, it was so small,  and it happened so fast, if you didn't know what to look for, you would've missed it. I'm talking about Canibus vs Ludacris. Don't believe me? I got recipets!

On 18 July 2000, Canibus released his sophomore album, 2000 B.C. Listen to the flagship single, 2000 B.C. here:

On 27 November 2001, Ludacris released his third album Word of Mouf. Listen to the opening track, Coming 2 America, here:

Notice something? Ludacris used the same sample as Canibus!

Of course, you might say, that's a reach! It's just a coincidence they both used the same sample, and I would agree with you, if not for this!

On 19 November 2002, Canibus released his fourth studio album, Mic Club. Listen to the 2nd track track, Poet Laureate:

Notice something? the last bar at the end of the song?

Word of mouth is good but a mouth of words is better nigga
No body gets sicker than the Ripper

A word of mouth is good! He's referring to the title of Ludacris's album!  Of course, Canibus being the rapper he is, had to make sure to declare himself better, but he did give a nod of respect to the southern rapper, and, if you remember at that time, southern rappers were not known for their clever lyrics, so someone like Canibus, who, in my opinion, is the greatest rapper of all time, who's been one of the most influential rappers of all time, giving a nod of respect to Ludacris was huge.

I'm sure Ludacris, who's clever word play and dope punchlines (influenced by Canibus, a lot of rappers back then were, a lot of them still are), appreciated it as well.

Imagine how I felt, when I came across a tweet saying Ludacris was never a good rapper. That's insane. How can that be when the best rapper alive (IMO) gave him a nod of respect.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed an small nugget of hip hop history!
