Perfection, the Art, and the Artist
In this video, Marcus is failing to distinguish between the art and the artist, and before I go any further I want to say he's absolutely correct. As Christians, we should be apart from the world and we should not be engaging in fornication, drunkenness' (you can drink) and drugs. You can't have your cake and eat it too. He is 100% correct.
However, that is a critique of the artist, but the art and the artist are two different things. I don't know if he's implicitly or directly saying Christians shouldn't listen to Maverick City and Dante Bowe because they don't live perfect lives, but it sure seems that way.
Maverick City and Dante Brown, Lecrae, and all the other Christian artists might seem "lukewarm" and "worldly" as people, but is their music is most certainly not. Their music is anything but lukewarm and worldly, which to me, is important.
There is a severe lack of good, quality, non corny, non cliche Christian entertainment out there, and if we're going to tear down artists, directors, actors, etc. for not living up to a specific standard, then we won't have nice things. A person is running a marathon, but their art is not. They make it, they put it out there, and as long as it isn't promoting sin and as long as its glorifying God, then it's good.
Pushback: "BUT AREN'T THEY ROLEMODELS??!?!"
Maybe? Maybe not, either way, as Christians, you should be teaching your kids that the ultimate role model is Christ and if the artist isn't behaving like Christ, don't emulate the artists behavior, but the artists behavior and their art are often two different things, especially if the artists art isn't promoting sin in any kind of way, especially if its literally indirectly and/or directly promoting Jesus Christ.
Pushback: "BUT IT'S TOO CONFUSING TO SEPARATE THE ARTIST FROM THE ART!!"
Algebra is confusing. Either learn it or don't, but if you want nice things, you need to separate the artists from the art. Flawed people can produce great works for God, the Bible is full of examples. How many Psalms did David write when he was sinning?
