One of My Favorite Tropes

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Erickson "Hammer" Lubin (@ericksonhammer) Proving 'em wrong. Coming back from adversity. The black sheep flourishing. He was right all along. They doubted me, but now look. Redemption. Whatever you want to call it, I love this trope.

Politics Ruin Everything

A sad day for #boxing but not unexpected. Showtime Sports will be shuttered at end of the year and with it Showtime Boxing will pass into history after a 37-year run that includes many of the biggest and best fights of that time. I feel for the many who will lose their jobs. — Dan Rafael (@DanRafael1) October 17, 2023 This is clearly the result of the BEST not fighting the BEST. Fighters afraid risking that 0 Over “marinating” matchups Hiding behind networks, and promoters Politics… Mess around and there won’t be any side of the street. Wake up. #Boxing — Jamel Herring (@JamelHerring) October 17, 2023 First HBO and now Showtime. Politics really does ruin everything, and that's not only politics and politicians "at the top." Everyone engages in it. The fighters, the promoters, the managers, they all ruin it with their "politics." Unfortunately, politicians and politics are always going to be with us, and the only way you fight a bad politician is with a good ...

Why AI?

Image
I've gotten some pushback over my use of AI in the trailer for my short story While I see both sides of the debate regarding AI, in this case, I was just using it as an experiment. The trailer took me a long time to make, and now that I've gone through the process, I'm confident I make future trailers way, way, faster, should I choose to do so. Right now, AI art doesn't really impress me, and the animation even less so. I think it has its uses, but after looking at the trailer, I can't help but recognize how much better an actual human would've done.  As far as the trailer goes, I think it's fine for the purpose I intend to use it for. We'll see how it performs and what the future holds.

Western Game Devs

Image
What is it with western game devs these days? I'm currently employed by a very large, world wide organization, with multiple layers of thick, near impenetrable bureaucracy, so it's entirely possible, what I'm blaming on devs, could in fact, be the fault of upper management and CEO's chasing profit over entertainment. Still, part of me wonders how much of it is upper management and how much of it is are people who like the idea of being game deves more than actually developing games. People who are more concerned with things other than  entertainment, (profit, pushing agendas), getting into positions of power and recruiting others from their "tribe."

The Jokes Write Themselves

Image
I grew up in white evangelicalism. They taught me that: - we’re all equal in Christ - anyone is welcome at church - we should uplift the oppressed - every religion deserves freedom - the words of Jesus must be taken seriously But when I planted a church centered on these… — Zach W. Lambert (@ZachWLambert) September 21, 2023 A genderless deity we call God. — Zach W. Lambert (@ZachWLambert) September 20, 2023 This is also another example of Christian Double Standards. No one would ever start their own boxing promotion, then declare kicking, headbutts, and grappling is legal, then complain because mainline boxing promotors don't associate with them.  No one would ever start their own school, declare they're not going to teach anything, then complain because the school districts don't associate with them. Yet people think they can start their own church, declare the fundamental teachings of Christianity to be wrong, then complain when mainline Christianity doesn't as...

Shadows & Schemes

Image
Shadows & Schemes "You're supposed to be keeping lookout, which means watching for evil creatures slinking about, not watching me work," Ven said, pressing his face against the weathered surface of the immense, circular stone looming above him. "How can I help that when you talk so much?" Mallie asked as she peered down a narrow winding passage. They stood within an Essiam chamber, an expansive subterranean cathedral with eerie runes and symbols intricately carved onto the marble walls that stretched into darkness high above. A soft green orb floated above them, emitting a gentle glow, that seemed to illuminate everything without casting any light. "Well, talking does help me," Ven said as he wiggled his thin metal tools inside lock. "You see, the art of lock picking—" "Art?" She asked. "Yes, Mallie. Art." "Go on." "The art of lock picking requires as little thought as possible. Since I c...

Skittles! Coming to a Black Market Near You

California will officially ban Skittles and other candies from the state starting 2027 as Governor Gavin Newsom signed bill AB 418, also known as The California Food Safety Act. The bill targets food products that contain the substances brominated vegetable oil, potassium… pic.twitter.com/zzLGp3vyel — Daily Loud (@DailyLoud) October 10, 2023  Hope California drug dealers are stocking up on skittles and trading oz’s of weed for oz’s of food containing brominated vegetable oil! I wonder how long it will be until we see a video of a cop running past an addict injecting heroin to arrest someone selling skittles.

Todays Military Summed Up in One Picture

Image
If this doesn't define today's military in one picture I don't know what does. On the left, is a man who  accomplished   something of substance, while the man on the right  failed but was still recognized, praised, and awarded more. I can't tell you how many times I've seen hard working airmen, who are actually good at   their jobs, get passed over for awards, promotion statements, and recognition, for someone who's terrible at their job, but "plays the game" by volunteering during work hours and engaging in "high visibility activities" that have nothing to do with the primary mission.  Its ridiculous.  Not only that, but when these people screw up, they rarely if ever get in any type of trouble, while the people doing their job  get thrown to the wolves. I think this comes to people in power, the paper pushing bureaucrats, who promote people just like them, which will slowly turn most positions of power into paper pushing bureaucrats. It’s a...

Do they Hate Beauty?

Why do western game devs, uh, hate pretty people? https://t.co/kRTPVkAtAy — Oliver Jia (オリバー・ジア) (@OliverJia1014) October 8, 2023

Hip Tok, Tik Hop, Social Media Rap

Image
Drake is catching a lot of criticism for his new album, which currently, at the time of this writing,  sits at 52 on Metacritic. For the record, I’m in agreement with the current consensus, in that the Toronto emcee’s new album is what all the cool kids refer to as Mid. However, there’s an important factor everyone seems to be missing. This isn’t a Hip Hop record. This is a record for a new genre I have dubbed: Hip Tok! Hip Tok! As a Hip Hop album this album is mediocre, but as a Hip Tok album this album is phenomenal! I can easily hear IDGAF playing in the background during a tiktok video of a bunch of people "turning up," or Bahamas Promises playing in the background of a tiktok of some guy "getting over his girl" or "on his come back." Listening to Tried Our Best and I can already tell its going to be playing in the background of while teens film themselves crying over a breakup.

The Wizard in the Woods: A Short Story Inspired by Real Events

Image
Thorn lay on his back, his whole body, from the bottom of his feet to the top of his head, throbbed in agony. He stared at the clouds, blinking back the tears, when a face appeared in view. Elara, his partner, long black hair, olive skin, brown eyes. “You should thank me for disarming that Skalgrin,” she chirped. Thorn hissed in pain. “Instead of impaling me with its spear, it just pounded me with its fists. I swear its hands were the size of boulders. He laid a hand on his stomach. “How about healing me…so we can leave.” She shook her head. “Already tried,” she pressed her hands on his stomach, and it tenses, grimacing in pain. It took all his strength to not pass out again. She lifted his shirt. “See that purple spot.” He craned his neck and saw a purple splotch the size of a fist on his stomach. “Means you’re bleeding inside,” her expression soured. “You don’t have too long.” Thorn let his head fall back, recalling earlier today, when Elara appeared at his door with two soldie...

They’re Lacking Passion

>be Fromsoft >don't bother making facial animations >most games don't even have the lips move when characters talk >simply hire good voice actors >characters are now more compelling than 90% of the industry pic.twitter.com/FmGa8RO4ai — Johann (@LookAtMyMeat1) October 4, 2023 I think it all comes down to passion. I get the impression the devs at From Software care. They approach it like a painting, from the design, atmosphere, ambience, music and lore. It’s more art than science to them, whereas your typical AAA western dev seems to look at it as “just another job.” To them it’s more science than art. More corporate.  BG3 doesn’t count, as I get the impression there was a lot of passion and care that went into that game

They’re Noticing…

I like how Zuck realized that the reason people disliked him was not because of the things Facebook did (any other company would’ve made poorer decisions in those circumstances)—but because he was goofy-looking. So he did what he always does: hire a growth team (a personal… — Nikita Bier (@nikitabier) September 29, 2023 More people are starting to noticed the Zuckerberg rebrand , and the fact the response is a positive one isn't surprising. Who knew positive masculinity wouldn't garner a positive response?? It's insane, the answer is so simple, all you have to do is the opposite of all the backwards insanity we see these days.
